Copy a Matrix item including the partent and all its child items?

Hello,

I need to make a complete copy of matrix items including the parent item and all of the child items/options. 

I am not having any success with this at this point.  Anyone doing this or have any insight as to how to do it?

I have tried nlapiCopyRecord and that does copy the Parent but it does not work on the Child items.
