Before Submit or After Submit - What Should I Default To?

I've created a User Event script that conditions several fields in inventory item records when saving. It was originally an After Save event, but I read in Netsuite help that I should default to using Before Save events for most record changes. I changed the script over, but now I find I can no longer edit the External ID field.

Did I make a mistake switching to Before Save? What would be the reasoning behind choosing one or the other?
