Sales Order Form - Custom Product Search

We have an extensive product catalog with many unique attributes indexed and supplemented by some custom records.

What is the best approach to implement a custom search of these attributes & records at the Sales Order Form level to assist in adding items to the sales order.

I am thinking an additional button that would launch a popup search.  Adding items from the popup would update the sales order item grid.

Is this possible? Other ideas?
