Error in nlapiXMLtoPDF

Using a SuiteScript we create a PDF attachment in an XML String then use nlapiXMLtoPDF to convert then create an attachment to an e-mail.

When and if the customer name which include in the XML String contains an & the script returns the error "Error Parsing XML: The entity name must immediately follow the '&' in the entity reference."

I've tried checking the customer name and replacing the & with %amp; and that gets rid of the error.  However in the PDF it returns the company name as: Test A %amp; B Company for a company name of Test A & B Company
