Next Bill Date - is this a reliable field in searches?

I have an automated credit card billing script that works based on the nextbilldate field.
Now I notice that there are a lot of orders that don't have a value in this field and some orders had a value but it is blanked out.
I do notice that it get the value by editing and saving the order.

Is this field reliable?
