SuiteScript - What is the minimum/maximum length for the Phone number field?

Hello, I am trying to find out what the minimum and maximum allowed length is allowed for the Phone number field on a Customer/Contact record. So far all I've been able to locate is that it is a string field and that our company preference for the format is 123-456-7890. Does this mean that if the phone number does not come over with 10 characters and is not formatted as set in our in our preferences that the script will fail?
