Set External ID via Script

Does anybody know if it is possible to set an external ID via superscript? I have tried this in both before submit and get nothing. No errors but no setting of external id either:

nlapiSetFieldValue('externalid', myVar);

I also tried:
nlapiSetFieldText('externalid', myVar);

This is running on the customer record.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!
