Checking the type of parent record

I need to check whether the parent record of a contact is a lead or a customer.  I know how to get the internal id, but since nlapiLoadRecord() and nlapiLookupField() both require a record type, I'm not sure how to do this.  Is there a way to load a record or lookup a field without knowing the record's type?
