Setting a value

Hello!

This should be easy but I am stuck and can't get it to work.

I want to have a field in a custom record populate with data from the customer record.  For simplicity's sake, let's call the variable 'custentity1'.

If I use a workflow and a formula to set the field, I either get the ID number of the customer in that field (rather than the value in the field) or nothing at all.

If I try to set the default value based on the same formulas, I can't get anything to happen.

How should I do this?
