For a record, get value from a custom list, given an ID in that list. (SuiteScript 1.0)

I have a record, in this case for a Customer, with fields which may be entries from a Custom List. I don't seem to be able to load values from the Custom List using nlapiLoadRecord or nlapiLookupField, even when I do know which Custom List is associated with the original record field. I'm not having any luck finding which API functions I should be using to retrieve this data.

Any ideas?
