Inventory Number

I am creating PO's via suitetalk of serialized items.  I'd like to also update the inventory number records of each of the serialized items at that time.  Is this possible at the PO stage?  If not is it possible to designate an external id for the inventory number records that are to be created so that I don't have to do a search in another call for every single serialized item?
