Setting inline html field on 'create' vs. 'edit' - Strange behavior

Our instance of NetSuite has custom records called Special Pricing. I've created a script that notifies users if any Special Pricing records exist for the selected customer. This script is deployed on sales order client and user event side. On the client side, the notification appears when the Customer field is changed. On the server side, the notification appears when hovering the Customer field. I'm using an inline HTML field to handle the logic. I've noticed that the server side script will run no problem when in EDIT mode but not when in CREATE. I've verified that the field is
