Below is an example of why:
Issue 126603: SEO > Request is spider then provide a 301 redirect for URLs that contain a JSESSIONID  is important

If you look at this URL on del.icio.us:

The second link is:
http://www.christmastreeforme.com/Christmas-Tree-Buyers-Guide;jsessionid=ac112b791f43f2c155c9cef546f18c28cfdb156e4d6f.e3eTaxeKbh0Te34Pa38Ta38Obxr0

Unfortunately, the person copied the URL with the jsessionid.

Now Google has found this link.

Issue 126603 would instruct Google to drop the ";jsessionid=..." from the URL so the link would point to:
