javascript needed to display multiline "salesdescription'

Right now in my Web Site Item/Category Templates (item drilldown) I am displaying the 'storedescription' followed by the 'storedetaileddescription'.
<%=getCurrentAttribute('item','storedescription')%><BR><BR><%=getCurrentAttribute('item','storedetaileddescription')%>

When the item's 'storedescription' is empty and I would like to display the multline non-html 'salesdescription' in place of the 'storedescription'... that is where I think a short javascript could come in handly, but due to the multiline nature of 'salesdescription', I haven't been able to make it work.

any suggestions?
