javascript + display when logged in

ok i am creating a menu that contains a members area (this links to customer only content) what i want to show is some text saying "access granted" when the user is logged in to the site.

Presumably i can use some javascript to detect their state and display accordingly, any pointers on this? or even better has any one achieved it?
