Out of the box image fields versue Custom image fields

I learned something today.

If you call:
<%=getCurrentAttribute('item','storeDisplayThumbnailHTML','')%>

The following will be returned:
<img src='/core/media/media.nl?id=497&c=482623&h=ac9a0b8e2847ebe468fc' border='0' alt='small_via860976as.jpg' title='small_via860976as.jpg'>

If you call a custom item field which is a file cabinet image:
<%=getCurrentAttribute('item','custitem_media_image_1','')%>

The following will be returned:
/core/media/media.nl?id=511&c=482623&h=1575ba28bf3d0088bc5c

Is there any way to make the custom image fields behave exactly like the out of the box image fields?
