Related Items: Possible to have a second, disctinct list on an item?

We are currently using related item groups on our items and they work nicely.

I would like to add a second related item list to our item template, so that we can separately organize related items of different types. 

One list would be more for an upsell products while the other would be more for similar or popular products of the item itself.

Is there any way to accomplish this?  I thought of creating a custom record to hold the new Related Item Group value, but it doesnt look possible to me.
