Publish Saved Search - Item List Layout

I have a section of my web site driven wholly by published searches. I now want to change the item list layout from the default of the site. I have tried to set the chosen  Item List Layout at the category level, but it is not respected. I can set it within the published search it self, but this is very tedious and it means I have to manually set the desired layout in 268 published searches instead of setting it once at the category level.

1. Is this a bug or designed to work like this.
2. If it is not a but is there an enhancement request to make Published Saved Searches respect the Item List Layout of the category they are in?
