GetSumof line item qty at checkout

hi guys - i am trying to get a sum of the line item qty at checkout - i had been using

<input type="hidden" id="signchannel_qty" name="_subqty" value="<%=getCartItemCount()%>"/>

but when upon submittal and payment of the cart the value is cleared. I am trying to pass this value using a post to a local webserver.

any suggestions
