Server Side scripting to alternate payment gateway

Curious if this is opened up now on an SuiteCommerce store so during the transaction process a server side call could be made to an alternate payment gateway other than the two options available to customers now during the checkout process just passing authorization codes back and forth rather than thru (merchant e-solutions and/or cycbersource). Any ideas on whether this is possible?
