Populating the Custom Record

Well I am fairly new to writing the suite scripts. I just want to know if I have to populate the custom record using the server side suite script is it possible or not?

I need to populate the custom record based on the checkbox checked on the main applicant form.

I guess I need to use the following API to do so :

var record = nlapiCreateRecord('customrecord*');
record.setFieldValue( 'name', <<name of the custom recod>>);
id = nlapiSubmitRecord(record, true);

I just want to confirm that is the correct way?
