Edit Link Visible For Custom Child Record Within Parent

I created a new custom record type and made it a child of the customer record type.  I did this by adding the customer list record as a field to my custom record type and checked "Record Is Parent."  Now my custom record type shows up as a child on the customer record on a subtab that I added as I expected.

However, what I need now is the ability to open the child records that I add to each customer via the edit link, similar to how you open the contact form for a contact attached to a customer record by clicking the edit link next to the contact name in the sublist.  When I click the button to add a new record I get my form but I can't get back into it to view once the record has been added.
