What is the best way to accomplish a Many to Many relationship among custom records?

We are looking to create a many to many relationship between 2 custom records in NS.  What is the best way to accomplish this while still maintaining usability of the system?

I need to allow the users to be able to change relationships around as needed without the risk of eliminating all relationships at the same time.  Is there a good way to accomplish a many to many relationship in NS or is it all going to rely on custom tabs based on searches, custom SuiteApps to aid in managing the relationships, SuiteScripts to handle the creation and changes of relationships, and multi-select relationship fields?
