Online Custom Record Form Template validate select field

I'm a little confused as to where to start with this requirement.  We have a Custom Record that has an Online Form Template for Non Netsuite users to create a record.  There are a couple of SELECT fields that have many OPTIONs available.  We need to require the user pick one of those options, but they seem to always leave it as the first option.  I've tried to use the HTML 5 required attribute, but that does not seem to be working.  Can I somehow add Javascript to validate the field?  If so, how as there is no FORM field,
