Character Limits of fields on custom record online forms

I have created a custom record online form where the user enters a record id and a set of values are returned for validation purposes.  One of these fields is the customer id.  When a user calls a record where the customer name exceeds 50 characters they encounter an error that the value entered needs to be shortened by x characters.
The customer name field on customer records can be 83 characters so why is the same field on a custom record online from limited to 50 characters?  Also, is there any workaround for this that will allow customer names that are longer than 50 characters?
