Formula in coulmn field error

I have a custom column field on a sales order that is using a formula to calculate the dollar amount remaining.

It works fine, but when there is a new line on the sales order that have not been added it shows ERROR: Field Not Found.

I think this is because the item has not been entered yet and the values are missing for the columns referenced in the formula.

This is pretty confusing to the users who think there is a real error.

Does anyone know of a way around this issue? I'd like to not display anything in this column until an item is entered.
