Dynamic Default Date/Time

Is there a way to get a custom field to dynamically default to the current date and time in one field?

I can get it to default to the current date or the current time.  I could add two fields (1 for date and 1 for time) but I woul dlike to get it into 1 datetime field.

The user doc is vague but indicates you should be able to do it.
