Changing Custom Element's layout/display to display in one line

Added Custom element for SubTotal and Tax.
Instead of displaying as

SubTotal: $400
Tax: $40
Total: $440

the elements are displaying as

SubTotal:
$400
Tax:
$40
Total:
$440

and appearing right at the bottom of the Transaction Sales Order/Invoice PDF layout..

Ugly but what can I do to fix that?
