How can we use "altemail" ?

Hi all,

Has anyone used the standard field "altemail" in NetSuite?

I am confused of its usage because,

1) It exists
2) It is available on search result
3) We can not see it, we can script it, import in, and we can search its value in global search
4) NetSuite Help says we can use altemail to do eamiling through NetSuite and its messages could get saved in Message tab.


I need to know if I can see it, use it, and HOW?
