Custom list limit

I have created a custom list and imported thousands of selections.  In the help it says that there is no limit to the number of values but I keep running into an error when trying to import additional values.  It either says that the abbreviation must be unique - they are unique or it indicates the values were imported but then they are not there when I look through the list.
Has anyone else run into this issue?  If so, were you able to resolve it and how?
