Custom Item Filed Error Field Not Found

I created a custom Item field, that is sourced from a saved search. It returns a number in a certain locations inventory

I need the custom item field to populate on a saved transaction search, and in a report. I have dug around on the forums and help, and can't seem to find anything on this kind of issue.

When I use a text formula and the id {custitem23} in a saved search it returns "Error: Field not found." I'm thinking it has to do with parent and child association but am not completely sure.
