Custom List of Accounts

I have a custom record that includes a custom field (type=list) and the list/record = Account.  It is displaying only the account name.  I need it to display the account number and name.  It is displayed this way on item records and other places so I'm assuming I am just missing something.  Can someone point me in the right direction?
