Changing Field IDs

I'm working in an implementation where my predecessor created custom fields with the NetSuite default IDs, eg. custbody2. I want to change these to reflect the field labels. Could this have any negative effects downstream? For example, if the field is used in scripting, will it break the script? If so, is there a good way to discover where else it needs to be changed?
