Filter Customer List

I would like to limit the customer selection options on one of my custom forms.  I was hoping I could do it similarly to the way you can filter the item options based on a save search but it doesn't appear that I can do it that way.  For reference our full customer list is 10,000 plus.  Can someone let me know what you may have done to accomplish this?
