Custom Entity List/Record When Source is STATUS

Setup a custom entity field where Type is List/Record/Source List is STatus/Source From is STatus.  Save and you get a pop up The field type must match the type of the field you are referencing from (free-form text).  Customer Statuses are setup in Setup > Sales.  We want to control what certain roles see in the Status dropdown list on entity and opportunity records so I created a status list for our Client Services team and another list for our Sales team but can't get by this pop up.  Has anyone had any luck with this?
