Adding a custom button to each line Item in a Quote ...

Hello,

We have a requirement to add a button to each of the line Items in a Quote (a custom Quote form).  It would be ideal if the button display is determined based on the Item's attributes.  Once the button is clicked, a script gets executed, which calls out to an external system that returns relevant information for display.  My first question is whether it's even possible to add a button to each of the Items in the list.  If so, is workflow the best option to achieve this?
