Cash Refund on Deposit Slip?

Is there a reason for cash refunds being listed separately on a deposit slip instead of being subtracted from the total deposit amount?

Say you have $300 worth of cash sales, but a $50 cash refund on the deposit. Recording that deposit, printing the slip would show that you are depositing $300 in cash, and requesting $50 cash back (which is pointless).

Why wouldn't the deposit slip do simple subtraction and reflect the fact that your are depositing a total of $250?
