Approving Journals

I have administrator rights, and I have set the system up to not require approvals for posting.

I want  to journal off some customer balances to bad debt. When I create the journal, is shows the journal listed under the customer as "Approved for posting". But nothing happens. It never changes. The account balance never updates.

How do I post journals of this type? Or clear customer balances?
