Case formula field

I am new to formula fields and am struggling to get the number of hours it took to close a case to show up in a saved search.  The following seems most intuitive to me, but apparently it can't find the fields I'm referencing;

{closeddate}-{createddate}

I have the formula type set to numeric, but have tried the others and still cant get it to work.  Any insight would be appreciated.
