What determines what Item fields are available for Direct List Editing?

There are several products that need to be edited and we have found the Direct List Editing (DLE) to be very helpful with this.  There are some fields, however, that can not be edited from DLE.  What makes this determination?  We would like the weight and MPN to be available for DLE

I also have some custom date fields where some can be DLE and others can't.
