Direct Editing link ???

Hi, hope someone can answer this question:


On the list, or a saved search, there is a link on the top called "Enable Editing"


I clicked the link, but I got the words "Please select an item type before enabling editing" showing up next to a pencil mark, yet I was not able to edit any fields when I click on the fields in the list.

I also did not see any pencil marks showing up on the top of the columns.
