How do I a connect to a custom record\field when it doesn't show up in the field list.

I have a custom record attached to the Items record.

A Transaction Saved Search can connect to the Item Fields.
I need to go from the Item Fields to my Custom Record (Child Status Record) and return the max value of ChildStatus.

Transactions-->Items-->Child Status Record-->ChildStatus(field)


any ideas?
