Saved Search Email Reminder

Hello everyone,
I've created a saved search email alert that will notify a sales rep when the customer contract expiration is 90 days away. I'm confused by my email options though. This isn't necessarily one in which I should select email upon update. It should be sent when the expiration date for their particular client reaches 90 days from now. What is the best way to do this? Is a workflow better for these types of alerts?
