Formula for calculating the amount of emails sent to customer per order

COUNT({messages.internalid})/COUNT({number}) <--- This is what I have been trying. I tried with the Formula (Numeric) and Formula (Text) fields, and I tried each summary type but cannot get it to produce the results I need. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong with this? I just need to know the amount of emails we sent to customers for each Sales Order.
