Grouping Item Numbers

Our engineering department has a bad habit of assigning new part numbers to each revision of an item. :eek:  This has caused a problem on my forecasting reports because inventory is held in the "new" item number, but the sales and ordering history can be in as many as five or six "old" part numbers.

Has anyone come up with a way to link part numbers together so they are counted as one on reports?
