Items not showing as backordered

We have about 5 items out of 3500 that continuously cause this problem.  For example: 
1) We currently have two pieces in stock of item "X". 
2) Entered an order for seven pieces of item "X".
3) On the Sales Order it shows five pieces as backordered.  BUT, when you go to the Inventory Item it does not show this item as backordered.  And this item will not appear on the reorder report.

We have searched and searched, but can not figure this out.  HELP!
