Purchase item as a carton, want to sell individually

We get some price discounts by buying in volume or rather volume packaging.  Our purchase orders need to have an item that designates that volume  i.e. XXXXX.CN4   Then some times we turn around and sell them as XXXXX  i.e. as an individual unit. 

Any suggestion on how to account for this, and how to get the inventory moved from being listed as XXXXX.CN4 to XXXX and have the value transfered.
