Return a special ordered serialized item?

I need to return a serialized special ordered item to our vendor under an RMA.  However the item is not avaliable to be returned because it is committed to the sales order it is linked to.  I tried editing the sales order and changing the item to "do not commit", I tried editing all the committed serial numbers off the sales order and have tried reallocating that item to uncommit it from the sales order.

Any other ideas?
