Switch Inventory Items?

Good morning all.  I need to switch the numbers on two of our inventory items.  They both are part of assemblies and were reversed from our first day of production - so there is a long history for both items.  I know I can't just edit and switch the names (oh,that it were that easy) and have NetSuite magically switch all the data between them.   I would have to give you way more information than you want to explain why I can't just assign new numbers and move forward.  Any suggestions on what I can do?
