Migrating items to matrix items, preserve history?

We recently added on the matrix functionality and while I know that existing items cannot be changed from one item type to another, I was wondering what the best way to migrate/preserve their inventory levels and history would be.

For example, if we create a new matrix item that is made of duplicates of 2 existing items, whats the best way to preserve the existing information so our accountant doesn't freak?  Can we link the duplicates via a parent/child relationship or something?

Any advice to make things easier when it comes time to do the books would be great!
